Neighborhood Profile

Neighborhood Overview

This historic North Portland neighborhood features the University of Portland, a private catholic college. However, the university is small and definitely does not feel like a “college town”. There aren’t many apartment complexes, just unique homes – some of which were built more than a century ago. With sweeping views of the Willamette, it is no wonder many shipbuilders lived here during World War II.

There is nothing quite like riding a bike along N Willamette Boulevard, even the Portland Marathon has its route pass by here. Notable landmarks include the Chiles Center, an arena at the U of P, and Columbia Park, featuring 35 acres, sport fields, tennis courts, and a pool. G.H. Hoch, the designer of the park wanted Columbia to look like a “famous park in Berlin.” Hoch also designed Washington Park in SW Portland.

Shopping and dining opportunities are mostly found along North Lombard Street, and include comfort food, vegan cafes and coffee shops.
